How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love Fighting Everdark Caligo
Everdark Caligo guide: use the Mountaintop event, frost resistance, fire, and anti-dragon buffs to shatter her icy armor and win.
Everdark Caligo punched me in the face with a frozen meteor the first time I met her. Not metaphorically—literally. I strolled into the arena thinking, 'It's just Caligo with a fancy prefix, how bad can it be?' Famous last words, right? Thirty seconds later I was a popsicle with a greatsword, wondering why I hadn't brought a campfire. But here's the thing: after a few more expeditions, a lot of swearing, and one very helpful Mountaintop event, I can confidently say that Everdark Caligo is not the nightmare I initially thought. She's more like a grumpy ice dragon who needs a good fire-infused slap. And who doesn't love a good slap?
Let's get one thing straight: Caligo doesn't have a huge gimmick like Everdark Augur did. She mostly just summons more frost, hits harder, and at around 75% health she wraps herself in icy armour. You can smash this armour on her head, torso, and tail—each broken piece deals a chunk of damage, and breaking all of them gives you a full stun. Is there a secret to smashing them? Not really. Fire helps, pure damage helps, and hitting the dragon in the face helps. Shocking, I know. Since her head is still the weak point even with the armour, and she's tanky as all get-out, the real fight is about preparation. And that's where the Mountaintop event comes in.

The Mountaintop Is Your Best Friend (Yes, Really)
If you haven't used the Collector Signboard to activate the Shifting Earth: Mountaintop event, what are you doing? It costs one Sovereign Sigil and sticks around for three runs. I did it on the second phase of the second day with two Wylders in my squad, and we had plenty of time. Here's the checklist I follow, and it's basically a love letter to frost resistance:
| What to do | Where | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Defeat the Flying Dragon fighting the Snow Troll | Centre of the mountain | Attacks possess anti-dragon effect |
| Defeat the two Snow Trolls or the Demi-Human Swordsman | East side or north | Improved frost resistance |
| Grab the blue crystal | North of the mountain | Favor of the Mountaintop: halves frostbite damage and buildup |
That last buff is the star of the show. Halving frostbite damage and buildup makes the entire fight feel less like a dental exam in a freezer. Plus, the anti-dragon effect on your weapon is just chef's kiss. So yes, do the event. Do it for your sanity.

Attacks That Will Ruin Your Day (and How to Not Get Ruined)
Caligo has a few nasty tricks, and I've eaten most of them so you don't have to. Here's my personal hit list:
-
❄️ Enhanced icy meteors: In phase two, she summons icicles that hover around her and fire at you like missiles. They're bigger than the phase one meteors, so dodging each one individually works better than rolling like a maniac. Not that I'd know anything about rolling like a maniac.
-
💥 Nuke crystal smash: She puts her wings together, fires a beam that creates an ice crystal, then explodes it with the same beam. This makes an expanding wall of frost—think Everdark Augur's wave but smaller. Just keep away. Simple, right? (Famous last words.)
-
🐉 Breath attacks: So many breath attacks. Positioning is 90% of not getting blasted, but watch out when she breathes straight down, especially if you're distracted smacking her legs. Some breaths are now coupled with charges or swipes, like Oceiros in Dark Souls 3. Don't get one-two hit. I believe in you.
-
🌀 Crystal tail slam: She breathes ice in a circle, creates a bunch of crystals, then slams her tail down after a short delay to explode them all. It's distinctive because it's the only time she spins and uses a breath attack simultaneously. If you see the spin, run. Or don't. Your call.
-
🧊 Ice armour charge: This is the phase two opener. She charges up and creates her frosty armour, then releases a big lingering frost AoE. You can stagger her out of it with something like Wylder's ult, but honestly? Running away is the smarter play. Live to fight another day, etc.
Bring Fire, Bring Wylder, Bring Snacks
Caligo is an ice dragon, so fire is her weakness. Shocking, I know. The Night of the Beast relic gives your starting armament fire, and unless you somehow got here without beating Tricephalos, you should have it. Level that weapon with a couple of smithing stones and you're good. If you want extra spice, bring relics with Fire Attack Power Up.
Wylder is already a damage-dealing machine, but with his unique affixes he becomes a fire god. His art gives a fire DoT, and his grapple skill gets a fiery follow-up that imbues his greatsword with fire. If you also grab the affix for an additional skill use, he can have 100% uptime on that fire infusion. And his grapple is fantastic for dodging Caligo's breath attacks. Who knew grappling hooks were multipurpose?

If you don't have those affixes, the Grand Drizzly Scene from the Collector Signboard shop gives his ult fire DoT, changes your armament's skill to Flaming Strike, and adds Fire Attack Power Up+2. It's basically a 'make Caligo regret her life choices' starter pack. And don't forget frost resistance from talismans, boss rewards, or Thawfrost Boluses you can find in frost ruins. Every little bit helps.
Rewards: Sigils and a Spooky Relic
Beating Everdark Caligo gives you around 20 Sovereign Sigils, plus a special relic called Dark Night of the Miasma. It has three effects: frostbite in the vicinity conceals you, your starting armament inflicts frost, and improved physical damage negation. Is it worth it? If you like sneaking around while everything freezes, absolutely. If not, the sigils are nice too.
So there you have it. Everdark Caligo isn't the hardest fight in Nightreign—she's just a preparation check. Do the Mountaintop event, bring fire, bring frost resistance, and don't get greedy when she starts spinning. Would I fight her again? Sure, after a cup of cocoa and a fire-infused greatsword. Maybe you'll even enjoy it. Stranger things have happened.
