Just finished my third playthrough of Elden Ring and I'm still in awe of how this masterpiece holds up in 2026! The legacy dungeons continue to be the crown jewels of this game, and I simply HAD to share my thoughts on which ones absolutely slap and which ones make me want to rage quit faster than you can say "You Died." 🔥🗡️

After spending literally hundreds of hours exploring every corner of The Lands Between, I've formed some strong opinions about these iconic locations. And let me tell you, the community debates about these dungeons are still going strong four years after release!

The Crème de la Crème of Legacy Dungeons

Stormveil Castle: The GOAT 🏆

OMG, can we just take a moment to appreciate this architectural masterpiece? Stormveil Castle is literally everything a dungeon should be. The way the paths intertwine like some kind of medieval pretzel is just chef's kiss. I spent hours discovering hidden rooms and secret passages that I somehow missed in my previous playthroughs!

The enemy placement is so thoughtfully done - challenging but fair. And don't even get me started on Godrick! That grafted monstrosity still gives me the creeps in the best possible way. I'm totally vibing with the players who consider this "the single best dungeon in all of video game history." No cap!

Raya Lucaria Academy: Magical AF ✨

If Hogwarts went full gothic horror, you'd get Raya Lucaria. The atmosphere here is absolutely unmatched - those chandeliers, the eerie blue glow, and those creepy burger-king-headed sorcerers throwing magic at you from every direction. It's giving "academic nightmare" and I'm here for it!

The verticality of this place is insane, and the way you can see other parts of the academy from different vantage points? Mind blown. Plus, fighting Rennala under that massive moon while dodging her summons? That's the kind of stress I signed up for!

The Haligtree: Love-Hate Relationship 💔

This place is both breathtaking and soul-crushing. The design is absolutely gorgeous - a twisted, rotting version of the Erdtree that somehow manages to be beautiful despite being filled with some of the most rage-inducing enemies in the game.

The architecture is on another level, with those massive branches creating this vertically complex space that feels both ancient and sacred. But let's be real - getting through those branches before the main area? That's my villain origin story right there.

The Bottom of the Barrel

Those Damn Haligtree Branches 😤

I know I just praised the Haligtree, but I need to keep it 100 with you all. Those branches you have to traverse before getting to the actual legacy dungeon proper? PURE TORTURE. I can't count how many times I've been yeeted into the abyss by those bubble-blowing jerks. It's giving "sadistic game design," and not in a fun way.

Every time I start a new character, I dread reaching this part. The anxiety I feel watching my runes fall into the void for the 50th time? That's the real Elden Ring experience, bestie.

Redmane Castle: The Disappointing Appetizer 🤏

Let's talk about the most underwhelming legacy dungeon - Redmane Castle. This place is so short that it barely qualifies as a "legacy" anything. It's more like a legacy snack. The whole area feels like it was designed as just a waiting room for the Radahn fight.

And the worst part? You can skip practically all of it by triggering the Radahn Festival! What's the point of creating a legacy dungeon if you're going to let players bypass it entirely? Make it make sense, FromSoftware!

Hidden Gems That Deserve More Love

Leyndell's Subterranean Shunning Grounds: Old School Cool 🕯️

This underground labyrinth doesn't get enough credit! It's giving classic Dark Souls vibes with its tight corridors, terrifying enemies, and that constant feeling of being lost. The level design here is peak FromSoftware - complex, interconnected, and rewarding exploration.

I spent hours down there during my last playthrough and still found new passages! And that moment when you realize how it connects to the rest of Leyndell? Mind blown. It's the kind of "aha!" moment that makes these games special.

Castle Morne: Underrated Excellence 🏰

Does anyone else think Castle Morne deserves more love? This compact but meticulously designed area packs so much storytelling into a relatively small space. The tragic tale of Irina and her father gets me right in the feels every time.

The atmosphere is perfectly gloomy, with those windswept cliffs and dilapidated structures telling the story of a once-proud fortress now fallen into ruin. And that Leonine Misbegotten boss fight? Still one of the most satisfying in the early game!

My Legacy Dungeon Tier List (Fight Me)

S Tier: Stormveil Castle, Leyndell Royal Capital

A Tier: Raya Lucaria Academy, Volcano Manor

B Tier: Haligtree (minus the branches), Castle Morne

C Tier: Subterranean Shunning Grounds, Crumbling Farum Azula

D Tier: Redmane Castle

F Tier: Those damn Haligtree branches (yes, they get their own tier of awfulness)

Final Thoughts

Four years later, and I'm still discovering new details in these legacy dungeons. The way FromSoftware crafted these spaces to be both challenging gauntlets and storytelling vehicles is nothing short of brilliant.

What's your favorite legacy dungeon? Are you team Stormveil or do you ride or die for Raya Lucaria? Drop your thoughts below and let's keep this debate going! After all, the true Elden Ring experience is arguing about it online almost as much as playing it! 😂
